Two years later
Rogue City Red Wolves Stadium Press Room
Dinah Cain was still the most amazing woman in the world.
But I didn't love her and she wasn't mine.
And nobody knew it except the two of us.
I guess that wasn't technically true. The people who needed to know the truth were in on it. The inner circle included our managers, senior publicity reps, and the world's most discreet divorce attorneys.
My team didn't even know that my marriage was over. We were getting geared up for pre-season training with a new quarterback and everyone questioning our ability to make another run for a championship. We didn't need the distraction that my personal shit would bring.
The press didn't know my marriage was over.
And they couldn't find out until it was done.
Which was going to be a son-of-bitch play to execute because I had to pretend that everything was fine for the next three weeks.
In public. As co-chairs of a high-profile charity event.
I looked over at Dinah, watching as she huddled with her PR Team doing the last-minute prep before the press conference kicked off. Her hair was shorter but still spilling over her shoulders in silky black waves. The pink was gone, a change from the last photo I'd seen of her on social media, replaced with streaks of red and gold. The realization that I didn't know she'd changed her hair color pinched, sharp, and metallic, deep inside me but I pushed it down. Ignored it. Just like I had done for the last twelve months every time it became clear to me that when it came to facts about my wifeâI was the last one to know.
And I hated it.
Dinah paused and looked over at me and all the sounds in the room faded to a jumble of noise and nothing. The last two years and about a million miles of harsh words, unanswered phone calls, and texts, stolen weekends that ended in more distance and resentment than reconnection pulsed between us. She swallowed hard, her whole body actively pushing down the memories that I know shuttled through her mind because they were the same ones that kept me awake at night.
The good ones.
The best ones.
The ones we tried to forget as we moved toward the goal of ending us.
I turned away, breaking the contact before I gave up the secret that I held closest to my soul. The one that I didn't even let myself acknowledge too often.
The secret that I still loved my wife.
And I had one last chance to get her back.
